Hurricane MARIA could threaten Haiti next week

HaitiAction.net - Port au Prince, Haiti — Will beleaguered Haiti be spared the latest natural disaster threatening to arrive next week? Hurricane watchers have been busy with the usual late summer flurry of hurricanes that have threatened the island. After a couple of close calls the National Hurricane Center in Miami (NHC) is reviewing the model guidance for the developing storm in the East Atlantic. The 14th storm of the 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season will be named MARIA.
The forecast models show a strengthening mid-level subtropical ridge building across the Mid-Atlantic that could keep this storm on a westerly course for the next three days. There is a small chance that a trough could develop enough to steer the weather system northwest above the 15º Parallel in 24 hours, failing that, the storm should stay near the 13th Parallel in the ITCZ until after passing south of the Mid-Atlantic NOAA buoy. Sea surface temperatures a almost three degrees warmer than the surface air at around 83º F which means that conditions are good for further increase in organizing convection.
The NHC claims that the upper-level winds are only marginally favorable for development. However, they stated that they expect gradual development and that the storm will reach Hurricane intensity before reaching the Leeward Islands. The Five Day forecast track has MARIA reaching the north coast of the Dominican Republic by Sunday. Before that storm arrives, there is a strong tropical wave that could saturate Haiti ahead of the more dangerous storm. The quicker moving 14L could overtake and merge with that tropical wave.
